Runner Swag Swap!

22 Jul

There is almost not faster way to get me jumping up and down like a little kid again than to send me a surprise in the mail. I love getting “fun mail.” As an adult, getting bills in the mail is a regular thing, but every now and then, something fun arrives that makes me super excited!

Yesterday, FUN MAIL arrived! EEEEEEEK!

A while back, a fellow running blogger, Eat to run. Run to eat., hosted a runner swag swap. All you had to do was send Jerry an e-mail letting her know that you were interested and include your mailing address. She paired runners together to swap a gift box of runner goods! I thought it was such a fun idea, so I immediately signed up to participate.

Well, my swag from my partner arrived yesterday! SWEET!
Surprise Running Swag
I got:

I am so excited! I have never tried an official sport wash, but I have heard it really does the trick on getting the stank out of “long run clothes.” Also, the reflective bands come with PERFECT TIMING! With Hood to Coast coming up in only a few weeks, these will be ideal for wearing during night runs. I have a lot of running gear, but I was seriously lacking on reflective, safety gear, so these will definitely come in handy! And Gu products? You really can’t go wrong!

Also, my super awesome swag swap partner made me a great running mix! I can’t wait to check out these tunes and add them to my running playlist!

IF I can get my act together by Halloween, I mentioned to Jerry that I might be interested in hosting a swap on this blog. Things with the move and new house should be much calmer by then, so I don’t see why I couldn’t, but I’ll let you know as that time gets closer. 🙂

Speaking of new house…tomorrow is the BIG DAY! We were supposed to close this past Friday, but due to circumstances out of our control, the closing got pushed to tomorrow. I am so excited! I really don’t know what to do with myself! We are going to finally have a home! There are so may awesome things about our new house that I don’t even have the time to write it all out here, but suffice it to say…super amazing things lay ahead!

How is YOUR weekend going? Did you RACE this weekend? If so, how did you do?

In Louisiana, we use the word “lagniappe” (pronounced LAN-YAP) a lot. It means “a little something extra.” Today’s post is just that…here are bits and pieces of what has been going on this week…

I am working the expo for the Crescent City Classic in New Orleans today, but I wanted to leave you with a few blog goodies…

The Crescent City Classic is the 6th largest 10k in the United States. This year, they are expecting over 18,000 runners! Wow! This year is the 34th running of the Crescent City Classic. For runners in Louisiana, this is a “must-do” race!

I’ve been house-bound since Baby Key has been sick this week, so I have been catching up on the following blogs…
The Wannabe Athlete
Running With Sass
Black Girls RUN!
Garden Variety TRI
Pavement Runner
No Meat Athlete
Stories of a Slow Triathlete
Twelve in Twelve
Vanessa Runs

In light of all the news of pink slime (GROOOOOOOOOODIE!), I am really considering becoming a vegetarian/vegan. I know this will be a drastic lifestyle change and will be difficult for me, but I am so tired of being continuously grossed out by what is going on with the meat packing industry.

I have to get back to work, but here is a little motivation to boost your running mojo…

And lastly, don’t forget that it is not too late to get in on the sweet Couch to 10k running plan! We are only in Week 2! Come run with me!

What has been keeping YOU busy this week?

Gear Review: Running Skirts RunLove Compression Socks and GIVEAWAY

26 Aug

This week I bring you the RunLove Compression Socks from! While my love for compression wear is no secret, this is my first foray into compression socks. I have several pairs of compression calf sleeves and have recently also tried out compression ankle sleeves, but I was really excited about the compression socks. In the heat of the summer, I have been dealing with a fair amount of ankle and foot swelling during and shortly after my runs and I was hoping that full compression socks would be just the ticket to help keep it at bay!

I was right! They work exactly as hoped!

My calves are NOT as thin as the model on the website's calves.

At first they felt a little snug and I was worried that they might actually make my feet fall asleep. Since I have worn calf sleeves before I was used to the tightness around my calf but the tightness around my foot took me a minute to get used to. I suppose I am just so used to regular running socks, but the thin, lighter material felt really snug around my foot, especially in my arch. I will say that since they were thinner, I had to lace my shoes tighter to keep them from slipping up and down on my heel, but that was not an inconvenience at all.

I wore them on a couple of different runs…one outdoor easy run and one indoor speed workout on the treadmill. In neither environment did I find the socks to make my legs too hot, itchy, or anything like that. Quite contrarily, I found that I felt zippier on my feet and my legs had a bit more spring to them.

If you aren’t familiar with the benefits of compression therapy, let me give you a quick run-down… (no pun intended!)
*    Compression socks specifically aid in the circulation of blood in the legs and feet.
*    Increased circulation brings much-needed nutrients and oxygenated blood into the legs and feet.
*    Thus, many runners feel their legs experience invigoration in their lower legs, allowing them to push harder and farther.
*    Compression therapy can also reduce the amount of damage suffered to the legs during runs and can help regenerate damaged tissues during the post-run recovery phase.

Beyond all the physical benefits, the Running Skirts RunLove Compression Socks are just down-right adorable! C’mon, tell me they aren’t cute!? I love the heart on the side because I can be fashionable, yet practical at the same time! In fact, several women at my run group the other night asked me where I got them! 🙂

Have I convinced you of their awesomeness yet? Yes? Alright!! Well, now it is time for you to try and win a pair of your own! Here are the details…each one of the following gets one entry. Leave me a comment below for each one that you do. The giveaway will run until Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 5:00PM CST with the winner being announced on Friday, September 2, 2011. 7 Links – The Craze That is Sweeping the Blogosphere!

28 Jul

In the last few weeks, the “7 Links” post has been making its rounds in Blogland. I have enjoyed reading others’ posts and was secretly hoping I would get picked someone to continue on this virtual chain letter. To my surprise, I got picked…TWICE (Take THAT everyone in high school who said I would never be popular! In yo’ face!). Thank you to the ladies over at Running With Sass and Bloggin’ ‘n’ Joggin! I feel like my little blog is such a bebe (I don’t have the years worth of posts to draw from like many others), but it will be fun to go back and look at a few posts that were special to me. So, without further ado, let’s hit it!

Most Beautiful Post: Team Blue = Future Ironman!
This one was easy. My “Most Beautiful” post was written the day we found out we were going to be parents to a beautiful baby boy. I would have been thrilled beyond words to be blessed with a baby girl, but I was secretly (okay, not so secretly) hoping to join Team Blue. There is no hiding the fact that one of my dreams for him is to be an Ironman Kona competitor. A mama can dream!

That's my boy at 19 weeks 4 days! LOVE.

Most Popular Post: Fastinistas, Stunners, Whatever You Want to Call Them – Just Call Them Athletes Too
Coincidentally, this post just happened to be from earlier this week. I wrote a response to some negative comments on an article found in Runner’s World magazine. Surprisingly, A LOT of people read it and commented on it. It made me feel good to see that there really is so much positive energy in the running community.

Most Controversial Post: Groups Doing Good: Black Girls RUN!
Okay, so this post doesn’t really qualify as “controversial” but it is one that I will say I was hesitant to even write. I wanted to highlight a group I found out about called Black Girls RUN! In writing the post, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t come off as offensive because I really do believe in and support their mission. In fact, there are plenty of awesome running black girls in my town that I would love to see start a group! (By the way, in case you haven’t noticed, I am not, in fact, a black girl.) 🙂

Most Helpful Post: A Few Words for the New Runner
I think my “Most Helpful” post would be “A Few Words for the New Runner.” In my weekly running groups, we see new runners almost every week. They literally show up and say, “I have no idea where I start with this whole running thing.” I remind them that they have actually taken the first step (no pun intended) by just showing up! This post got really positive feedback and seemed to help a few people I know get motivated.

Post That’s Success Surprised Me: Don’t judge a runner by his waistline.
This is another one that is easy to pick. Shortly after I first started my blog, I went out and ran a booze race (read = barathon). And, no, this baby bumpin’ runner didn’t drink along the way, I just ran. Anyway, I heard some nasty comments made about a fellow runner who happened to have a few extra pounds on him. It made me mad, so naturally, I blogged about it. 🙂 It turns out, there were a lot of people that could relate to it.

Clydesdales aren't just horses, folks! 🙂

Post That Did Not Get the Attention it Deserved: If It Isn’t Neon, It Shouldn’t Be On
Ha! I can’t help but pick If It Isn’t Neon, It Shouldn’t Be On. Really, it was one of my favorite and most fun posts to write and I suppose that others did not find the humor in it that I did. C’est la vie! My running buddies do know that I love me some BRIGHT stuff, so if it comes in neon, I WILL be buying it. I have no willpower. NONE.AT.ALL.

Have you ever seen anything more beautiful?? 🙂

Post You are Most Proud Of
I am going to cheat on this one, because this post has not actually been written yet. (I know, such a cop out, right?) This Saturday will be my first venture into the world of triathlon. I have done many duathlons (see photos on katieRANthis) but have only recently started swimming. I am super nervous…mainly because, at 6 ½ months pregnant, I fear I will be the very last finisher. I refuse to let that stop me from competing though! This Saturday afternoon I plan on writing a recap of my experience. I can guarantee you that it will be one of my proudest moments to date! Be sure to come back and check it out!

T-2 days until the Rocketchix Triathlon. YIKES!

And now it is time to Pay It Forward! Here is who I would like to see a 7 Links Post from…
Kevin from 5ks And Cabernets
BJ from Running BJ
Toni and Ashley from Black Girls RUN!
Steph from Steph Runs for Wine
Janae from Hungry Runner Girl
Adrienne from Eat Run Live AZ

I hope you enjoy their blogs as much as I do! Check them out!
